The new coalition intends to retain the help-to-buy scheme for up to five years, despite it being criticised for benefiting wealthier households.
The programme for government agreed by Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Green Party said that the scheme, which offers a tax rebate of up to €20,000 to first-time buyers, would be “retained and expanded”.
Fine Gael has now said it intends to retain it for the lifetime of the government, which could be up to five years if it sits for a full term.
